Tour Gibson Pond Park in Lexington, SC

In 2015, Lexington experienced a "100-year flood" that severely damaged several of the town's mainstays. One of the places that suffered heavy damage was Gibson Pond Park. The dam failed, completely emptying the reservoir onto the town below. For several years, the park's dam sat in disrepair, and the pond remained empty.

In 2021, thanks to the hard work and diligence of the Town of Lexington and a FEMA grant, the dam was rebuilt, and the park was given a beautiful overhaul. Today, it is a favorite spot for people in Lexington to relax, meander along the trail, or paddle around the pond.

    The Recently Rebuilt Dam

If you enjoy relaxing to the sound of rushing water, you're sure to like the view from the picnic shelter just across the bridge from the front parking lot. From here, you can enjoy a meal while watching the water whisk over the dam and head under Gibson Road.

The original dam was built in 1930 and was destroyed in the 2015 flood. The dam was rebuilt to current standards and topped with a lovely bridge that allows you to walk over and alongside. Look down and may find turtles sunning themselves on the rocks below.

Picnic Shelters Provide a Cool Amosphere

There are four picnic shelters dotting the landscape of Gibson Pond Park. All are equipped with fans because, in the South, even a small amount of moving air is considered a blessing on hot and humid days.

You'll also find a few park benches along the walkway under the shade of the tall pines, and a small play area with a swing set for the kids.

Down nearer to the pond, there is a swinging bench suitable for two, or maybe just one will do. Watch the ducks as they swim along or come ashore for a rest.

Just a bit further off, near the large gathering area at the end of the parking lot (just outside the range of the photo shown), you will find a small dock, perfect for launching a small (non-motorized) boat, canoe, paddleboard, or kayak.

    Gibson Pond Trail

On the farther side of the parking lot, near the large covered shelter, well-equipped outdoor kitchen, and restrooms, lies the trailhead leading into what appears to be an enchanted forest.

The 0.4-mile trail winds its way through the forested area, meandering alongside the pond and looping back onto itself. The trail is mostly flat and fully paved, making it a relatively easy stroll.

On quiet days here, you'll hear birds singing and squirrels scrambling up the trees. You might even forget you're in civilization for a moment, which is precisely what you might be just what you're seeking.

    Insider Tip

Half-way down the short, paved, walking path, is a bench with a great view of the lake. It's usually pretty quiet back there, so it's a nice place to sit and enjoy the view without too much traffic.
